This project investigated the relationship between the parts and the whole of an object. In all objects, many different parts form complex mechanical assemblies, each with their own unique material and function. When put together, all of the distinct pieces and parts integrate to form the whole. For my project, I researched a 16mm Bell & Howell Filmosound Specialist Projector, studied its history and function, and documented it through drawings and photographs. I then began the disassembly process, photographing, indexing and drawing each component of the machine to further understand its inner workings. During this project, a theme I discovered was the relationship between appearance and function. In addition, I noticed a visible symmetry but hidden disorganized complexness within the projector that would not have been discovered had it not been taken apart and investigated piece by piece.
